Chavalon Thermal Power Plant above Vouvry
Caption
The Chavalon Thermal Power Plant above Vouvry was Switzerland’s only oil-fired power station. Commissioned in 1965, it burned heavy fuel oil to supplement hydroelectric production during periods of high winter demand.

The hillside complex operated until 1999. Its generating plant, compact cooling towers and tall chimney formed one of the most distinctive pieces of post-war energy infrastructure in the Rhône Valley.

The plant stood on the Chavalon terrace at about 825 metres elevation; its chimney was about 120 metres high. The surviving industrial complex is an unusually complete reminder of Switzerland’s brief era of large-scale oil-fired electricity generation.
