Bisse Vieux Hiking Trail and Water Flume
Caption
The Bisse Vieux is one of Nendaz’s historic irrigation channels, with documentary evidence showing it existed by 1658. The channel is about seven kilometres long and still serves an irrigation function.

Valais bisses were engineered to move mountain water across dry slopes with only a gentle gradient. Depending on terrain, the flow may run in earth cuts, stone-lined channels, pipes or elevated flumes.

Today many bisse maintenance routes also function as hiking paths, preserving access to infrastructure that originally existed for agriculture rather than recreation.
