Flower of the the Indian rhubarb or umbrella plant (Darmera peltata) measuring 2cm in diameter
Caption
The umbrella plant (NL schildblad) grows in medium to wet soils preferably in the shade, but will also grow in full sun if the soil remains moist. Prefers cool summer climates. The common name is in reference to either the umbrella-like flower clusters or the inside-out-umbrella-like appearance of the leaves or both. The ideal plant for borders of a pond.
It has small, pink-to-white flowers (2cm wide) in rounded clusters which appear atop thick hairy flower stems of varying height (0.5-1 meter) in early spring (April in NL) before the foliage emerges.
The plant is a slowly spreading thick-rhizomed perennial which typically grows 1 - 1.5 meter tall. Large, rounded, medium green, toothed and lobed leaves (to 60cm across) emerge after bloom. Each leaf arises from the rhizome on a long petiole which attaches to the center of the leaf, thus creating a large leaf cup. Upward facing leaves typically collect and hold small pools of rain water. As autumn approaches, the leaves often transform into vibrant shades of red before dying down.
