Caption
The Langkofel Group (Gruppo del Sassolungo) in the Western Dolomites as seen from the east. From left to right the Grohmannspitze (Punta Grohmann), Fünffingerspitze (Punta Cinquedita), Langkofeleck (Spalone de Sassolungo) and Langkofel (Sasso Lungo). Not visible on the photo are at the left of the Grohmannspitze the Innerkoflerturm, Zahnkofel (Il Dente) and Plattkofel (Sasso Piatto). The highest point in the range is the Langkofel with a height of 3181 metres.

The region was formed in the early Triassic period (about 230 million years ago) as a coral reef in a shallow tropical sea. Hard limestone (dolomite rock) was able to form on the outside of the reef, whilst the rock in the interior remained brittle and was quickly eroded away. This caused the Langkofel group to be an arc which is only open towards the northwest. Within this arc there is only one small mountain, the Langkofelkarspitze.
