The medieval town of Gruyères in the Swiss canton of Fribourg combines a well-preserved historic centre, cobbled streets and Gruyères Castle. In striking contrast, the town also has a strong connection with science fiction through the H.R. Giger Museum. Swiss artist H.R. Giger created the biomechanical designs that formed the visual basis for the creature and environments in Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien and influenced later films in the series. Nearby, the H.R. Giger Bar continues the same distinctive biomechanical style.
