The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) in Innsbruck
Caption
The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) is the name of a building from the early 16th century that was erected on the occasion of the second marriage of Emperor Maximilian I. The house stands among other medieval houses and shady galleries.
Not the house, but the 3-storey balcony has a golden roof consisting of 2657 gilded copper tiles. The 16-meter-wide roof was used to quell the rumors of financial hard times. At the time, it was used as a royal grandstand to enjoy the tournaments that took place outside on the square in all luxury.
The underside of the roof contains several relief scenes depicting Maximilian life. The image in which he stands between his two wives is the most prominent (Maria von Burgund was his 1st wife who died in an accident at the age of 25. His 2nd wife was Bianca Maria Sforza). This was a deliberate effort not to offend any aggrieved old allies he had made in his first marriage.
