Caption
Château de Gruyères is first mentioned in written records in 1244 and was built in the 13th century as the principal residence of the Counts of Gruyère. Its original plan follows the Savoyard square-fortress model known as a carré savoyard.
Major work in the 15th century transformed the defensive castle into a more comfortable seigneurial residence. After later periods under Fribourg bailiffs and the Bovy and Balland families, the Canton of Fribourg reacquired the property and opened it to the public in 1939.
Scaffolding along the exterior records building or conservation work in progress at the time of the photograph.
